Growing up in the country I have seen my fair share of racoons. Â Whether they are lumbering across the road in front of our car or tearing apart our garbage, it seems they were always around.
This morning, while eating my breakfast I noticed something furry on our deck. Â Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a racoon. Â A sleeping raccoon.
He (or she) ripped apart our recycling and afterwards decided to take a little nap on our deck.
Strange since I am sure it has a den nearby.
Here is the little guy chilling in the mess he created:
Cute right?
They seem so innocent, so ready to be picked up and cuddled, but raccoons are vicious, carry a variety of diseases and can cause a lot of damage to your house and property.
As a kid I remember loving this scene from the movie The Great Outdoors.
I first noticed our racoon friend at 8am this morning. Â Now, more than 12 hours later he is still curled up on our deck. Â No amount of persuasion has resulted in him leaving.
Fingers crossed that he decides to wander off later tonight!
Have you ever had a problem with raccoons? Â

Maybe he’s friendly. Odd things do happen lol. There’s a skunk in our neighborhood that is friends with my cat. We were leary at first but he never sprays…just visits.

Stephanie – I would be terrified about a skunk! Although my uncle had one as a pet with its spray removed – so strange!

I’d take a raccoon over a bear any day of the week! At least the raccoon just makes a mess of your garbage, a bear rips apart fences then makes a mess of your garbage.

I remember years ago, when I was in high school, I was over at my boyfriend’s house. We were in the basement and I was totally kicking his ass at whatever the latest Tekken release was at the time, and his parents went out to pick up dinner. We heard a god-awful noise in the kitchen that we knew couldn’t be the cats, so we crept upstairs, him with replica katana in hand and me with a baseball bat, and there were not one but TWO raccoons in the kitchen! They had come in the bathroom window which was left open for the cats. We managed to get the side door open and scare them out, but jeebus, it was freaky!

OMG! That is a crazy story! I wouldn’t know what to do. I would have laughed afterwards but at the time, not funny at all!

I am terrified of raccoons!!! I don’t even know what I would do if there was one in our yard. Wouldn’t go outside. LOL.
They are determined stubborn creatures. I hope he goes away quickly!!!

I came home to a raccoon on my front lawn tonight. He didn’t even flinch when I got out of the car or walked up my front path. Usually we see them walking across our fence at around 9 p.m. every night. Part of living in the city.

I used to work at a marina. We had a family of raccoons that lived in/near the garbage. They are cute, but I always kept my distance.
When I was living in downtown Toronto a few years ago, the raccoons would wake me up with their fighting…the first time I heard it I was SO scared, I didn’t realize they could be so loud!
Happy to hear your raccoon visitor has moved on :)
