Easter Eggs have always been an integral part of Easter for me. Â I have so many memories as a child of decorating eggs with egg dye, food coloring, Kool-Aid and crayons. Â So many fun variations to try and marvel at the colors, patterns and unique patterns I could create.
This year was the first year we decided to make Easter Eggs with traditional egg dye but we also wanted to try something new and different. Â After reading the instructions and watching a video I was ready to tackle making Silk Tie Easter Eggs.
We love celebrating Easter and Spring. After a long winter, it’s so fun to think about tulips, easter egg hunts, and everything spring! Every year we make these Bunny Cupcakes and Easter M&M Cookies – plus we sometimes forgo turkey for a delicious Brown Sugar Glazed Ham.
With these Silk Tie Easter Eggs our table is decorated and we are ready for a delicious family meal.
To make the dyed eggs I went to Value Village (thrift shop) and purchased some silk ties with patterns I felt would transfer well to eggs and a few white napkins.
Making the eggs is easy as you are really using Chemistry to transfer the colors.
Silk Tie Easter Egg Directions
- Cut silk ties into small squares large enough to wrap around 1 egg
- Wrap egg with silk tie (pattern side facing the eggshell) cover with a white cloth and secure with a twist tie or elastic band
- Place wrapped eggs in an enamel or glass pot filling the pot just until the eggs are covered
- Add 3 tbsp of white vinegar
- Bring to a boil
- Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 20 minutes
- Remove eggs with tongs and allow to cool
- Once cool, unwrap and marvel at the transfer of the pattern
We have displayed these eggs a number of different ways, but one was to combine our Silk Tie Easter Eggs with some done in a traditional dip. We placed them together in a long cylindrical vase to make an easy DIY handmade Easter Egg Centerpiece – perfect for our Easter Table.

I love this because you can find ties for so cheap at consignment shops. We will have to give it a try next year.

this is a completely new idea to me. I used to paint little scenes on blown eggs and used them to decorate twigs in a vase.

Can you eat these eggs after dying them with the ties?
Kerrie @ Family Food and Travel says
My understanding is yes because silk is a natural product, but it is entirely up to you and what you are comfortable with.

These are so cute and will be fun to do next year

This is wonderful !!!! I collected ties at yardsales a whole bag for 1.50. But can you leave them out and still eat them or keep them refrigerated? Did you need to use another pot that you do not cook with because of the dye?
I had another instructions where you cover with tie and cloth, then tie with cheesecloth on outside. Secure. Then you book (watching water) for 3 hours. You can then keep them year to year and cover with a shiny glaze. I am ready to do this today! Thanks!
Kerrie @ Family Food and Travel says
Linda, I didn’t keep mine and I wouldn’t have eaten them because the dye does seep through the eggs. There might be a way to coat them so you can keep them. I was happy to make new ones the next year!
