A Slice of Fall #QualityEssentials

Fall is all about apple cider, cool nights and warm days, beautiful leaves, Back to School, the pumpkin patch and Thanksgiving.  A time to be thankful for what we have, share in the beauty of nature and get prepared for a long Winter ahead.  While I love the freedom of summer there is something special about the return to schedules, cool, crisp nights and Fall traditions that I love.

Have you ever thought about just how many times in your day your family uses petroleum products/oil?  I certainly hadn’t before, but once I did I was shocked at the amount my life is fueled by oil.  From the moment I start my day with a shower, to putting on my makeup, making breakfast and school lunches, walking to the bus stop, my drive to town and back, grocery bags, plastic wrap etc, etc.

petroleum products 2

Here are just a few places I found petroleum and oil products in my day:

  • Plastic of my shampoo bottle
  • Shower curtain
  • Shampoo, soap, hair gel
  • Plastic bag around my bread
  • Perfume
  • Lipstick
  • Gas in the school bus
  • Backpacks, lunch bags litter free containers
  • Gas in my car
  • Zippers on our clothes
  • Soles of our shoes
  • Crayons
  • Toothpaste
  • Paint on our walls
  • Plastic wrap
  • Water bottles
  • Deodorant
  • Clothing

And I could go on and on and on.  Looking around there are very few things that do not come from a derivative of oil.  Not to mention the materials that make our homes, our cars, and most importantly in the coming months make our clothes and houses warm.  Whether we think about it or not, oil is an essential part of our life, each and every day. We use home heating oil to heat our home. It’s wicked expensive – I wish we had gas.

I don’t think the average person knows just how much oil we use on a regular basis. This was a very insightful post. I do think that because petroleum has turned into such a necessity in our homes. Big oil companies need to figure out how to keep their products being recycled in the best way possible to keep our habits as earth friendly as possible. Its such a catch 22. But I think it has to start with the big companies first, because yes, I use all those products daily!

There are so many things that we don’t know about in the products we use. I work at the aquarium, and I tell people about how many things have kelp in them, and they’re amazed. Some of the same things that you listed above have kelp in them, like toothpaste and shampoo. It’s amazing to learn these things.
