My husband and I always marvel at the questions that people ask us and the statements they make when we are out with our twin boys. The two most common are:
“Are they twins?”
“Looks like Double Trouble”
Both of which I find equally irritating. But, the one that really gets me… “are they identical?”
I DON’T KNOW!
While that may seem like a crazy thing to not know, I can honestly say that I don’t. My boys were born via emergency c-section and were literally ripped out of me. The doctor did not take time to check the placenta before it was thrown out and unfortunately I had been gassed (the anaesthetic kind, not the chemical warfare kind) and my husband was not there yet to ask. Our specialist believed the boys were identical but could not tell if they shared a placenta or had two placenta’s that were fused together. (https://editorialrm.com) That was the question we needed an answer to. Unfortunately, on the day of their birth we did not have the opportunity to find out.
We could pay to have DNA tests run. But, in our hearts we already know.
To find out what another woman thinks about this issue check out Sh*t People Say to Moms of Twins and be ready to laugh your a%$ off! And remember, before you ask, “Are they twins?” or other silly things the parents have heard those questions at least a million times before so be prepared for a sarcastic response!

You could always reply, “Do they look identical to you?”
I’m so sorry that during your doctor didn’t take time to check. And in some respects, I’m even sorrier that people bug you about it, as if it’s any of their business anyhow!

Sarah,
Great comeback! I should use that. Usually I am just to annoyed to respond.
