Poutine is definitely considered one of Canada’s national dishes. While not considered a ‘healthy’ food, it certainly is a yummy one and one that my husband (who is an immigrant) was baffled by when he moved here.
I took him to poutine restaurants, ordered poutine from fast food outlets but still he thought the idea of cheese, gravy and french fries was strange. Then, when I put white vinegar on my I think he seriously considered breaking up.
Now, a few years later, he’s a convert. So, if you’ve never tried poutine before – you should. It’s fabulous!
Here is my easy version of homemade poutine:
- Seasoning salt
- Package of Brown Gravy
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese or cheese curds
- 1/2 bag McCain Superfries or other frozen french fries
-
Place superfries in a non stick pan (I line with tinfoil)
-
Sprinkle generously with seasoning salt
-
Cook fries as per directions on bag turning often and sprinkling with more seasoning salt half way through
-
Grate cheese and set aside
-
When fries are close to being cooked, place brown gravy mix and water into a small pot, stir
-
Bring to a boil and stir until thickened
-
Place fries in a large bowl, sprinkle with grated cheese and top with hot gravy

These look so good. They remind me of the gravy fries that we use to have where I use to work. I will have to make these at home, now that they are on my mind again.

When do you add vinegar? At the end or before the cheese & gravy?
Kerrie @ Family Food and Travel says
I add it once it’s all done as a flavour enhancer – but poutine is great without it too!

Poutine is absolutely fantastic and I’ve gone to restaurants where they have had chunks of beef or pulled pork. Yum
