Today was the boys’ two year check up at the doctors. My goodness, I am exhausted just thinking about it. Usually my husband and I both go together for these appointments because for some unknown reason our children LOVE the doctor’s office and have a habit of running away, opening exam doors, and jumping on the scale when not watched carefully. However, my husband was working and I braved the doctors visit alone.
The boys HATE holding my hand while we walk down the street. So, the adventure began with me holding onto my two cherubs while they screamed and cried and stomped their feet from the car to the office. I smiled at all the people we walked by trying to emanate a calm nurturing persona. I hope I fooled them.
Then, the elevator (which my boys think is an amusement park ride) and the waiting room. Much to my surprise the waiting room was not full of people as it usually was so the boys took it upon themselves to turn the waiting room into their personal running track, wrestling mat and jungle gym. Had there been just one or two people they would have acted shy, coy and bashfully smiled at the other patients. However, an empty room was fair game for their shenanigans. I wish I got a picture. But, unfortunately I was too busy trying to explain what inside voices were as the receptionists tried in vain to take phone calls and book appointments.
Once the nurse called us in, I was hoping that corralling the boys into a room would calm them down but instead they fought over the books in the room, tried to hug it out and then eventually starting singing and dancing. By the time the doctor came I was hoping she would treat me instead of them.
Luckily we have the most wonderful doctor how adores my boys and makes each visit fun, informative and entertaining. It is always nice to know that the boys are “perfect” and their 2 month premature birth did not have any adverse effects on them.
I wrangled them to the car, got them their snacks and water and headed home. We played with trucks outside until the mosquitoes got too thick and then settled in for some stories before bed. It is hard to believe that those sweet cuddly boys could be so full of energy only moments before. Off to make a cup of tea and put my feet up. Need to rest up for our next adventure tomorrow.
