This week has been busy. Busier than normal. But, yesterday through the heat, humidity and thunderstorms one of my favorite parts of summer arrived…our CSA share. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and is a partnership between you and a farm. You pay your money (ahead of the growing season) for a “share” in the farm’s bounty. Each week you receive a box of veggies (you can also do CSA’s from meat farmers) depending on what is fresh and ready to be harvested. There are lots of CSA’s available throughout North American and Europe. Here is a directory for Ontario CSA’s.
Some of the reasons I love our CSA:
- I feel really good about supporting a local farm and ensure they have dependable income to support their farm
- I love feeding my family locally produced, organic vegetables that were grown by a family I know and from a farm I have visited
- The variety of vegetables is beyond what I would normally pick up in the grocery store. It challenges me to try new recipes and use new produce in my cooking.

We get the “Cook’s Box” which provides us with a large volume of produce. Most of which we eat, but the rest is designated for my husband’s catering business. This week’s share included:
Fresh Strawberries, Garlic Scapes, Peas (Sugar Snap and Snow), Lettuce, Salad Greens, Radishes, Baby Beet Greens, Spinach, Arugula, Kale (3 varieties),
