Slow Cooker Sweet and Sour Pineapple Chicken

A delicious and healthy slow cooker recipe that has all the flavour of take out but not the high fat of fried food.

  • 1 cup chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 3 tbsp cider vinegar
  • 3 tbsp reduced sodium soya sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
  • 4 chicken breasts cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 1 large can of pineapple chunks in juice drained
  • 3 large carrots in thick slices
  • dash of Tabasco
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of pepper


  1. Add onion, chicken cubes, pineapple chunks and carrots to slow cooker.
  2. Then, In a large bowl whisk together brown sugar, orange juice, ketchup, vinegar, soya sauce and ginger.
  3. Pour sauce over the vegetables and chicken and turn slow cooker on.
  4. Cook 6 hours on low or 4 hours on high stirring once during cooking to ensure chicken is coated. 15-30 minutes before serving add dash of Tabasco, pinch of salt and pepper.
  5. Stir and return to cooking.
  6. Serve over rice.
