Slushie drinks are my favourite to enjoy in warm weather. But, like many parents I don’t want my boys consuming a big drink of artificial colours, flavours and sugars. This weekend with a glimpse of summer weather I wanted to try and make something that replicated a slushie with whole fruit. I flipped through my Vitamix cookbook that came with my Vitamix 7500 and found lots of inspiration but not exactly what I was looking for. With a bag of frozen fruit and some orange juice I created my own summer whole fruit slushie.
- 2 cups ice cubes
- 2 cups mixed fruit (I used frozen strawberry and blueberry blend)
- ¾ cup citrus juice (I used orange)
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp hemp hearts
- Put all ingredients in the Vitamix, start at level 1 and then move up until 10.
- Use the tamper to push the mixture down to be fully mixed.
- Serve in a tall glass with a straw and topped with
If you have local fruit in season you’d like to use, just add more ice cubes to give your drink a real slushie consistency. Or, use frozen fruit as shown here to keep the drink icy cold.
This drink is the perfect combination of ice, fruit, zesty citrus and a hint of sweet. It is cold, refreshing and can easily be made into a Mocktail of Cocktail with the addition of 7-Up/Sprite or Vodka. My family loved this drink and I love that it is made of natural ingredients and whole foods. With the addition of hemp hearts the slushie has some protein and all of the nutritional benefits that hemp hearts bring.
Whether you are sitting by the pool or coming in after an active game of soccer, this Berry and Citrus Whole Fruit Smoothie is a great refreshing drink.
